Frequently Asked Questions
What is the benefit of FLVio?

FLVio is a video web service that allows website operators to very easily add user generated video content to their website.  FLVio solves three main problems that website creators are faced with when adding user generated video content to a website:

  • video transcoding (decoding the myriad of possible video formats and re-encoding to web-optimised FLV or H.264 video);
  • video storage (videos are relatively large and take up considerably more space than images and text content);
  • video delivery (optimal video delivery can require large amounts of bandwidth, which can often be difficult to predict in advance).
How does FLVio differ from video web sites like YouTube?

YouTube is aimed at the end user (B2C).  It is a viral video portal.  FLVio is a video web service aimed at website operators (B2B) providing the video encoding and delivery technology behind a simple API.  A FLVio customer could easily build a YouTube-style video sharing site using FLVio behind the scenes.

Doesn't YouTube allow users to embed videos in external websites?

Yes, but embedded videos retain YouTube branding and advertising.  YouTube does not delegate control of the UI to the website operator.  End users must be redirected to the YouTube website to upload videos.  FLVio integrates behind the scenes and leaves the UI, website and player branding fully in control of the website operator.  FLVio is a white label service.

How does FLVio integrate with my website?

FLVio MediaKit is a web service and offers a RESTful API for integration with external web applications.  The API takes advantage of open standards such as HTTP and XHTML to make it as simple as possible for clients to implement.  Your web application can upload videos to FLVio and manage its own library of videos all via the API.

What programming languages are supported by the FLVio API?

FLVio provides a RESTful API using open Internet standards (HTTP, XHTML).  The API is programming language-agnostic. In other words, any programming language on any architecture/operating system can be used to integrate with FLVio.

Why does FLVio offer Flash video?

FLVio offers Flash-compatible video (FLV and H.264) because that has become the de facto standard for web-based video playback and is the simplest method for offering video from a web site. FLVio is continuously looking at emerging popular technologies and will offer support for new video formats and technologies as the market demands.  For example, support for Silverlight compatible video is currently being investigated.

What media file formats do you support?

FLVio supports almost all common video formats from all popular recording devices (camera phones, digital cameras, video cameras, web cams, etc).  These include formats such as avi, mp4, 3gp, flv, mpg/mpeg, mov, m4v, wmv. Many other formats are also supported.  The actual compatibility comes down to the video/audio codecs used within the video file. You can test video compatibility by uploading a video to the demo encoding application.  Note that video files protected by DRM are not supported.

Is FLVio HD (high definition) compatible?

FLVio supports H.264 video encoding, a popular codec used for HD video.  FLVio can offer HD quality video, playable within a web page by Flash player, for customers that require it (contact us  for more details).

What is the FLVio pricing model?

The FLVio pricing model is a simple structure, based simply on bandwidth used per month and size of video storage.  Contact us for more details.

I want to offer user generated video content (UGC) on my website. Can FLVio help?

Yes.  FLVio was designed for UGC.  Uploaded videos are automatically re-encoded into a web-optimised Flash video format (FLV and/or H.264) for progressive HTTP streaming direct to the web browser.

Our business wants to offer corporate videos such as official announcements and training videos. Can FLVio help?

Yes. FLVio can be configured to produce higher quality video, more suitable for corporate use.  Want to offer HD video? Contact us.

Is FLVio a Content Delivery Network (CDN)?

No, but FLVio has partnerships with CDNs to offer optimal video delivery speed.  CDNs cache video content as close to the end user as possible to maximise video playback performance.
